China is getting closer to launching real operations with its new aircraft carrier Fujian, the country’s first to be equipped with electromagnetic catapults for aircraft launches.
Images released by state media show for the first time J-15T fighter jets prepared for takeoff with afterburners engaged, as well as shadows of jets flying over the deck, suggesting advanced air operation tests. The ship has already undergone eight rounds of sea trials since May and is expected to enter service by the end of 2025.

Fujian represents a technological leap for the Chinese Navy, which until now had operated only ski-jump (STOBAR system) carriers for short takeoffs. The direct adoption of electromagnetic catapults, bypassing steam-powered versions, places China alongside countries like the U.S. and France in using the modern EMALS system, capable of launching everything from fighter jets to drones more efficiently. Fujian’s air wing is expected to include stealth J-35 fighters, KJ-600 early warning aircraft, and unmanned aerial vehicles.
In addition to Fujian, China is investing in new amphibious assault ships like Sichuan, which also features a catapult, and expanding its naval presence with warships and landing vessels.
